Nay Family Quest

Last weekend we had a little get-together with the Nay family. Grandma Nay called it the "Nay Family Quest" and had lots of fun activities planned. It was a pretty fun day. Here's a few pics:

On our way home, the kids and I stopped to see the progress on the Brigham City temple. It is looking really good! Dan left earlier on his bike to ride all the way home from Brigham to Syracuse. He missed Jorgen's lovely meltdown in the middle of the crosswalk...

Gluten Update

So some of you know this already, but some of you don't. A couple weeks ago we finally had our boys' appointments with the GI specialist at Primary Children's. To make a long story short, they want Jorgen to go back on a normal diet and they want Andrew to go back on gluten but stay off dairy. In September we have follow-up visits with more tests. Specialists are notoriously hard to get into, so we just have to wait until then.

It is quite a relief for me to say the least. I have never thought Jorgen had a problem. There really was no discernable difference in him before going gluten/dairy free compared to during the trial period. Even now, with him back on a regular diet, he just seems like a normal healthy 3-year-old to me. And I spend more time with Jorgen than with anyone else, so I think I have a good idea of what he is like.

For Andrew, I am glad we did the trial with the gluten/dairy free, and glad that we can add gluten back in. I am thinking that perhaps his pediatrician was right on the money when he suggested limiting dairy over a year ago (which we tried but didn't stick with it long enough). I am not going to go gung-ho and replace everything just yet. There is a chance he could have to go back to gluten free in September, but in the meantime he will enjoy having regular bread. Since we still have to watch for dairy, I will most likely still have to buy some of the gluten-free mixes since most regular commercial mixes contain milk in some form. Also, most bread sold at the store has milk in it. There is one brand - Granny's Delight - that is dairy free and he likes it, so that's what I've been buying. The doctors were a little concerned about Andrew's growth - or lack of growth. They want to test his thyroid when we go back in September.

Overall, we have been trying to eat more healthy meals and snacks as a family, which hopefully will be a good thing. I am trying to serve more fruits and vegetables, but getting the kids to actually take some and try some is a challenge. They pretty much eat baby carrots or raw spinach every dinner because they won't try any other vegetables.

Going through this experience has given me more appreciation for those who struggle with food intolerances and allergies. I have even come to appreciate Vegans - primarily because food marketed to Vegans doesn't contain dairy products in it. We've found some new products we like, and I have really become more aware of what is in the ingredients in a product. Do you really know what you are eating? It has been eye opening to me how much junk we eat (as a whole society). If you eat junk, you will feel like junk. If you eat good healthy food, you will feel good. It's actually quite simple.

Meet Bubbles (and farewell)

So at the Economics Fair (see previous post) Bethany really wanted a goldfish but didn't have enough paper nickels to buy one. But she ended up selling enough of her bows that she could buy one. She was so excited to bring it home. She named it Bubbles. But alas, the poor thing only made it for just over 24 hours. We were gone most of Saturday and came home to a dead fish. We had a fish funeral in the bathroom and Bethany cried. She was very sad indeed.

Economics Fair

Bethany's 3rd grade class held an Economics Fair and she decided she wanted to make hair bows. She did a good job and I thought they were really cute. She was one of the few kids who made something all by herself (most of the kids were selling candy, pop, etc). She ended up selling every single one.

Animal Report

Andrew had to do a report on an animal for 1st grade. He chose monkeys. He did it all pretty much by himself and it turned out cute. He was quite proud of it.

Catching Up

Here is my attempt to catch up. You can decide which picture matches the day best: Day 15 - Action; Day 18 - Eyes; Day 19 - Summertime; Day 20 - Water. Yes I skipped 16 and 17. I may get them or I may not. It is summer after all - time to be outside having fun, not inside blogging!

Day 14 - Someone You Love

I am way behind on this photo challenge. So I'm skipping some and combining others. Here's a few people I love, on Father's Day.

Aunt Sharon's Funeral

They say bad things happen in three's, right? Well just a few weeks after my dad passed away, my Aunt Sharon also passed away. And the next day my Great-Uncle Ross passed away. It's been kind of a rough month for the Tolman family! Last Friday, June 17th, I drove my mom up to Burley, Idaho to attend the funeral for Aunt Sharon. She was married to my mom's brother Jaren. They divorced over 20 years ago, and I think the last time I saw her was at my cousin Rob's wedding. He got married when I was still in high school (or was it jr. high?) Anyway, she had Huntington's disease for the past 20 years. She was in a nursing home for the last 10, and passed away on June 11th. All of her kids (my cousins) and my Uncle Jaren would always come to the Tolman reunions all the time. So we went to support them. In some ways it reminded me of my Dad's funeral - none of his family was there (one of those families that doesn't really contact each other except for occaisional Christmas cards), but there were a lot of my mom's family. The same with Aunt Sharon's. The Tolmans are just awesome, I must say. They know what it means to be a family!

Here's a few photos for my siblings who couldn't make it.

Pallbearers

Trouble with a Capital T (otherwise known as Uncles Rex, Jaren, and Lloyd)

When I was little, my cousin Danny died in a car accident. I only vaguely remember his funeral (I was six). However, one of my most vivid memories of my Aunt Sharon is her crying and crying and crying at her son's funeral. She was buried next to her son in the View cemetery.

Uncle Jaren and Aunt Sharon's six living children:

Tiffany, Lori, Bill, Mike, Rob, Phillip

Uncle Jaren's grandkids. I don't think I could remember all their names even if I tried!

Jaren's siblings and their spouses

I didn't go to my great-uncle Ross's funeral, which was the next day in Orem. My mom went with her cousin and brother. I didn't really know him that well and I was getting weary of the funeral scene. From my mom's description he was a genuine WWII war hero. He earned a Bronze Star and a Silver Star. He was the spouse of my Grandpa Tolman's youngest sister Hattie.

My cousin Rob's wife Kris sang this song that, of course, made me cry but also teaches a great message about suffering, death, and it's purpose. Although it is hard, death is an essential part of our Heavenly Father's plan. I heard a quote somewhere that our death is even more important than our birth, eternally speaking. It's definitely hard for those who are left behind, but if you think of it in terms of the person who has died, it should be a celebration. They get to be reunited with loved ones and friends, and with our loving Heavenly Father. And they are free from their mortal bodies, which in both my Dad's and my Aunt's cases was a huge blessing for them. Someday they will be reunited with their bodies and they will be perfect. I know this to be true, and I take great comfort in that knowledge.

Day 11 - Sihlouette

Siberian Iris - one of my favorites.

I have a lot of favorite flowers...

(Day 12 is supposed to be a Sun Flare. I just have a little point and shoot camera (a nice one) so I'm not sure I will be able to do it. I will probably just skip that one!)

Day 10 - Animal/Jensen Park

We had a little picnic at the nearby nature park, and went on a quest for a picture of an animal. Pretty much the only animals there are birds, but there are plenty of birds to choose from. I couldn't really pick a favorite, so you can just enjoy a bunch of pictures. Early evening in the summer is one of my absolute favorite times of the day. It's just perfect.

There were several sets of Mother/Baby ducks. Very cute.

Jorgen got a picture of a beetle:

He looks like he's speed-walking. (he wasn't)
